MidAmerica St. Louis Airport MetroLink Extension

The St. Clair County Transit District is delivering a $192 million multimodal transportation project designed to enhance mobility and connectivity throughout St. Clair County and the entire St. Louis region. The project includes a MetroLink extension to MidAmerica St. Louis Airport, new roadway infrastructure and an extension of the MetroBikeLink Trail.

MetroLink Extension

The project includes a 5.2-mile extension of the MetroLink light rail system from the Shiloh-Scott Transit Center to MidAmerica St. Louis Airport. The extension features a new MetroLink station located adjacent to the airport terminal and parking facilities on Airport Boulevard. The station also features “Taking Flight,” a large-scale public art installation by artist Dale Rogers.

New Roadway Improvements

Roadway improvements associated with the project include a new 2.4-mile access roadway that extends from Rieder Road to Airport Boulevard, connecting to Interstate 64 and offering a new entryway into the airport, as well as a 1/3-mile extension of Rieder Road to Scott Air Force Base’s Cardinal Creek Gate. These enhancements provide additional access options within the corridor and improve connections to key destinations.

MetroBikeLink Trail Extension

The project also includes a 4.5-mile extension of the MetroBikeLink Trail running parallel to the MetroLink alignment from the Shiloh-Scott Transit Center toward MidAmerica St. Louis Airport. The trail features scenic views, rolling terrain, multiple bridges and connections to the larger MetroBikeLink System throughout St. Clair County. This opened to the public in June 2026.

Project Funding and Partnerships

The project was funded through a partnership between the State of Illinois and the St. Clair County Transit District (SCCTD), including $127 million from the Rebuild Illinois Capital Program and $65 million from SCCTD. The project was fully funded with no additional cost or debt to taxpayers, completed without federal funding and delivered on time.

Numerous public agencies, contractors, engineers and community partners have collaborated on planning, design and construction of the project.
